Fast Five movie review

Fast Five is about to open the summer movie season. Does it start with a bang or a fizzle? Oh, we are definitely going with ''bang'' here! We'll break it down for you in our Fast Five review.

Dwayne Johnson in Fast Five

How many franchises can you name that manage to make it to number five? The number isn't very big. Now, narrow that down to franchises who effectively manage to reinvent themselves.

When you slice it down a bit more to franchises who have fans rabidly awaiting the fifth installment: Well, a monkey could count that high. So it is with great pleasure that I tell you that Fast Five is one of those films. Anyone who reads my reviews can tell you I'm a huge action movie fan, but I've never been a gear head. I couldn't name one of the cars in any of the films. I really liked the first and the third movies. I sort of liked the fourth. I wasn't so keen on the second. But this one really nailed it.

Here's the story: For the first time, the film opens exactly where the last one left off. FBI agent Brian O'Conner and his girlfriend Mia Toretto break Dom Toretto out of prison with a pretty spectacular bus crash and some super fast cars. They head off to Rio de Janeiro to hide out. While trying to keep a low profile in a favela, we find out that Mia is preggers. Vince has a job for them... one last one that will set them up for quite some time. It's a train heist and let's just say it doesn't exactly go as planned. And damn, director Justin Lin knows how to open a film!

We've got a shoot-out, jumping from a moving train and Brian and Dom flying off a bridge, Thelma and Louise-style. Well, without the suicide thing. You've seen it in the trailer so I'm sure you'll understand me when I say that the action in this film is a complete blast. The gang is all back, including Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Tego Calderon, Don Omar and Gal Gadot. We've also got some newcomers, including Elsa Pataky as Dom's love interest and, oh yes, Dwayne ''The Rock'' Johnson. Johnson plays a stone cold federal agent named Hobbs who is out to hunt down Dom. This is the guy you call in when everyone else fails.

There is an epic battle-pissing contest between Dom and Hobbs that could be described as a ''clash of the titans.'' Two giant men, throwing each other through walls and kicking the crap out of each other. It's a blast to watch these two go at it. So is their staring contest. I was taking bets with my seat mate about who would crack up first. Strangely, the Rock seems to be sweating up a storm and Vin is fresh as a daisy.

Vin Diesel and The Rock go at it in Fast Five

The franchise is in a transition period right now. It's actually heading away from racing films and moving towards heists. And really, the franchise's willingness to change is part of the reason this film worked. That and the humor. Fast Five never takes itself too seriously. There are silly moments all over the place... and there needs to be. Some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy and some of the effects are most certainly going to take up a full episode of Mythbusters.

Making sure the audience knows that the writers ''get it'' with a little humor and some crazy action makes the silliness easy to forgive and fun to watch. There is also a pretty poignant moment that sets up the fate of one of the characters.

Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in Fast Five

Fast Five also sets up where the next film takes place. And I, for one, am looking forward to it. Fast Five will be released on Friday, April 29, 2011. P.S. I'm not always a fan of scenes after the credits, but oh my God, you must stay for this one! I'm not going to say a word about what happens, but just trust me. If you leave, you'll be kicking yourself.

Why is Vin Diesel getting Hollywood star before Leonardo DiCaprio?

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce released a list of the celebrities that will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, including Vin Diesel, Jennifer Aniston and Kate Winslet. Who hasn’t received a star? Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Redford, among others!

Is Vin Diesel a bigger star than Leonardo DiCaprio? It appears the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce thinks so!

Vin Diesel and Leonardo DiCaprio

The Walk of Fame honorees for 2012 have just been announced. "These individuals were chosen from among hundreds of nominations to the committee at a meeting held on June 17, 2011 and ratified by the Chamber's Board of Directors," the announcement from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce reads.

Those that will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012 include Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Winslet, John Lasseter, Valerie Bertinelli, Matt Groening, Mariska Hargitay, Patricia Heaton, Marg Helgenberger, Adam West, Boyz II Men, David Foster, Vince Gill, Jennifer Lopez, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and Vin Diesel.

This is a distinguished and, for the most part, much-deserved list of celebrities to receive a star. However, why have A-list stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Al Pacino and Robert Redford not yet received a star on the Walk of Fame?

The LA Timesreports there are a number of reasons why hot celebrities do not have a star, including they may not want one! Also, they must be nominated, selected and agree to attend and pay for the ceremony. They must also be "in their field" for at least five years, leaving many Hollywood newcomers off the list.

Confirmed: Fast and Furious 6 and 7 are coming

The Fast and Furious franchise will be back for a sixth and seventh installment -- and one of its biggest stars will be returning, too!

Vin DieselCan't get enough of Fast and Furious? Today's your lucky day. Vin Diesel, one of the original stars of the franchise, says they are coming back for not just one more movie, but two!

The actor confirmed the news during a photo shoot for The Hollywood Reporter's Rule Breakers portfolio.

"With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn't have enough space,"Diesel told The Hollywood Reporter.

The last flick in the action franchise, Fast Five, has raked in a huge total of $626 million worldwide -- and paves the way for the return of characters played by Eva Mendes and Michelle Rodriguez.

"We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages," Diesel explained. "The studio said, 'You can't fit all that story in one damn movie!'"

Why is Vin Diesel getting a star before Leonardo DiCaprio?>>

Diesel is a producer in the ten-year-old franchise and is planning the sequels with director Justin Lin and screenwriter Chris Morgan.

And yes, hottie Paul Walker will be back -- because the true meaning of the movies is family and brotherhood.

"It's not about the action and the cars, which initially appealed to me when I was 25 years old," Walker said. "Because if that's all it was, it would have fallen off a long time ago."

Mark Wahlberg in Ted: When action stars flex their comic chops

We're used to our beefy action hero actors breaking bones... not tickling funny bones. Out-of-character forays into comedy and family friendly fun often flop at the box office, but -- as Mark Wahlberg proves in Ted -- they can also be surprising smashes. Here's a nod to our favorite action guys gone funny who are laughing all the way to the bank.

Mark Wahlberg at MTV Movie Awards

Mark Wahlberg

In Mark Wahlberg's new sleeper hit, Ted -- the brainchild of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane -- Wahlberg's childhood character wishes his teddy bear, Ted, could come to life. Well, he does... and then never leaves. Rather, he becomes Wahlberg's boozy, bad-mouthed buddy bear. The role is definitely a departure for Wahlberg who, before Ted was breaking box office records, was breaking faces in movies like Contraband, The Fighter, Shooter and Max Payne. As a matter of fact, since his disturbing turn as Reese Witherspoon's cute yet totally psychotic boyfriend in Fear , Wahlberg has been one of the go-to guys in Hollywood for brooding machismo.

Dwayne

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Can you smell what The Rock is cooking? Who knew when Dwayne Johnson posed this question as a larger than life wrestling persona that the answer was actually a white-hot career? Even with such a silly tagline, "The Rock" managed to move from the wrestling ring into the arena of high-action blockbusters such as Doom and The Scorpion King. He threw us all for a loop, though, when he took a break from filming fight scenes to focus instead on family fare. OMG, remember The Tooth Fairy?? We were starting to think he sold his brawny soul to Disney. Thankfully -- that lapse in judgment aside -- he hasn't lost his gritty intensity. He's up next in The Fast and the Furious 6 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

Vin Diesel on NBC's Today Show

Vin Diesel

Known for his signature bald dome and husky voice, Vin Diesel has lent his bada** appeal to many manly movies, including xXx, A Man Apart and Babylon AD. Most notably, he amped up the testosterone in both The Fast and the Furious and the Riddick franchises. So, what compelled him to take on The Pacifier? His most impressive feat in that flick was diaper dexterity -- not exactly the hard-core shenanigans we've come to expect from the hard-bodied star. He's been low profile the past few years, so here's hoping that sharing screentime with The Rock in The Fast and the Furious 6 harkens a return to Diesel's rough-and-tumble roots.

Arnold Schwarzenegger with Bodyguards

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Who could ever forget Arnold Schwarzenegger's iconic role as a cyborg assassin in the Terminator films? Or his raw manliness as Conan? California's ex-govvie also played up his pumped-up physique in high-octane hits such as Collateral Damage and True Lies. It seemed strange, then, when he occasionally threw in the funny family film -- think Kindergarten Cop, Jingle All the Way and Junior. Following a lengthy stint in politics, it appeared Schwarzenegger might have hung up his action star hat and abandoned all manner of movies for good. But when he said he'd be back, he wasn't joking. The "Governator" returns to the big screen in all his action-packed glory for The Expendables 2 , along with four more action flicks slated for release in 2013.

Vin Diesel shows his softer side by singing Rihanna's "Stay"

He's muscular, he's an action star, and he sings? Vin Diesel shows his romantic side with a little help from Rihanna.

Vin Diesel

Who knew that Vin Diesel was such a romantic? His girlfriend, Paloma Jimenez, clearly knows now, since she was on the receiving end of a Valentine's Day gift that has gone viral.

On the day of love, the actor posted a raw video of himself singing along to Rihanna's single "Stay." It was just Diesel in a dark room with a microphone and the Rihanna video projected on the wall next to him. The video was uploaded to his public Facebook page, where it got a lot of positive comments from his fans.

It went over so well that the Fast and Furious actor decided to recut the video with better lighting and a more artistic feel. He uploaded the new one on Monday.

On his Facebook page, Diesel revealed, "So Our Vinbook video went viral... Naturally, I became self-conscious... and thought maybe I shouldn't have exposed myself like that... Then I had dinner with my dad, and surprisingly... he said he loved it... and thought it was deep on a few levels...."

Not only did Diesel's dad respond, so did Hollywood.

The actor shared, "The Studio called today... and asked if I would be interested in doing a Musical... Hmmm... P.s. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, you don't have to be perfect... just believe in yourself."

It might be interesting to see the muscular action star sing in his impressive range and break out of his stereotypical movie roles. While there is certainly no casting news to announce yet, it is something for Diesel to mull over.

Fast and Furious: 6 Plot details finally revealed>>

What is certain is that he loves his girlfriend, whom he addressed in the video with "Happy V day, amore," three times at the end of the song.

Diesel, who is notoriously private about his personal life, told Hollywood.com in 2006, "I'm not gonna put it out there on a magazine cover like some other actors. I come from the Harrison Ford, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino code of silence."

It looks like that silence was just broken with a song.

It looks like studio execs are thinking Fast.

Vin Diesel in Fast & Furious

Thanks to the killer trailer that debuted at the Super Bowl , we're pretty pumped for the May 24 release of Fast & Furious 6.

Now a rumor has emerged that a seventh film may be on the fast track.

In a recent post on his Facebook page, Vin Diesel hinted that production on Fast & Furious 7 could begin as early as this summer.

"There was an early screening in LA this week of Fast 6. The crowd reaction was surreal... and their demand for the continuation was powerful.

It's remarkable to think I first embodied this character in 1999... and the evolution continues.

P.s. Filming begins this summer in LA, where it all started... talk about a studio in sync with the audience..."

If production is in fact set to begin so soon, that would put the film in theaters as early as next year.

Anotherfilm would make Fast & Furious one of the longest-running film series of all time. The franchise would be tied with Police Academy for the film with the most follow-ups. It would be surpassed only by Halloween, which has had eight installments .

It wouldn't come as a great surprise if Universal went ahead with another Fast & Furious film.

Fast and Furious 6 plot details finally revealed >>

Fast Five, which hit theaters in 2011, took in a hefty $209 million at the box office, while its predecessors took in an average of $139 million.

Diesel has appeared in all but one of the Fast & Furious films.

Paul Walker, Ludacris, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese also appear in the action flick.
